The General Services Administration (GSA) recently awarded a $37.2 million contract to increase energy efficiency at three buildings in the Great Lakes Region, under Siemens Government Technologies, Inc.
The Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) covers 13 different projects spread across the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building, Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse and the Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio.
Under an ESPC the vendor — in this case Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. — pays the upfront costs of energy-saving retrofits in exchange for payments from energy cost savings over time.
The contract covers the installation of four central heating and cooling plants, energy-efficient exterior lighting and high efficiency hot water boilers to help save money while meeting peak demand at the facilities.
The project will cut energy use by $2.5 million in its first year and will continue to lower energy costs during the life of the 20-year contract period, according to Siemens Government Technologies, Inc.
Judy Marks, the president and CEO of the company, said in an announcement that the technologies installed in the buildings will help GSA meet its energy consumption and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
"As the largest single user of energy in the U.S., the federal government is leading by example through its commitment to improving the energy efficiency of America's publicly-owned buildings, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the nation's energy security,” Marks said.
