In a September 2021 announcement for Climate Week, Maine Governor Janet Mills announced continued success for the state’s effort to install more than 100,000 heat pumps. In a bill passed in 2019, the Maine legislature set a goal to install 100,000 heat pumps by 2025, and the bill was signed into law by Governor Janet Mills. Since the law was enacted, the state has installed more than 30,000 heat pumps, including 27,326 that received rebate incentives provided by Efficiency Maine Trust between July 2020 and June 2021. Installations in this period more than double the number installed in the previous program year. The heat pump initiative in Maine is supported by incentives through the Efficiency Maine Trust and a low-income heat program at MaineHousing. The heat pump target is an element of Maine’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the state’s buildings.
