A new NASEO publication, “Equity Considerations in Building Energy Code Activities” can help states, localities, and other stakeholders prioritize equity in their processes of adopting and implementing updated building energy codes, designing building performance standards and stretch codes, developing strategic program partnerships, and expanding the building code official and construction workforce. This report outlines opportunities to include equity in state and local building energy code programs and policies, which have implications on the life cycle energy consumption of all new buildings in a jurisdiction and cascading affordability, comfort, and safety impacts on the residents and occupants of homes and offices across the country. This resource was developed with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office and the input of several practitioner states.
