On November 5, 2024, Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) in Georgia launched its Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Technician course in response to the increasing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure.
Participants received scholarship funding from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA), which covered tuition and personal protective equipment (PPE) to utilize during the course and in the field. GEFA provided this funding via the U.S. State Energy Program (SEP) after piloting a similar successful scholarship program for training building maintenance operators.
During the 50-hour EV Charging Technician course, students learned about installing home and commercial EV chargers, EV charger commissioning, safety best practices, diagnosing and resolving problems, and networking needs and protocols.
Siemens partnered with GTC on curriculum development, agreed to hire graduates of the program, and provided 16 chargers for the College’s new Charger Lab that enables students to practice hands-on commissioning and troubleshooting of chargers. Additional companies are offering apprenticeships to graduates.
The next cohort is set to begin on January 21, 2025.
